Kaleidoscope

Kaleidoscope is Butler School’s program of after-school activities, and is intended to provide convenience for families and enrichment for our students.  It is designed to be an easy transition from the school day at 3:15 dismissal into the start of Kaleidoscope activities at 3:30.  The children are collected directly from their classrooms and are supervised by a staff member while they enjoy a brief break and snack (provided by parents) during the 15 minute interval.  Most the activities are held on our campus, and for the few that done off-site, bus transportation is provided by the school.  This helps to alleviate some of the “hustle and bustle” from family life by incorporating after-school activities into our school environment.

During the three seasons of Kaleidoscope (Fall, Winter and Spring), the program selections will vary, while some activities will be available throughout the school year, such as dance, tennis, vaulting and yoga.  In the Fall and Spring seasons, our wonderful campus and adjacent park land will be used for several outdoor activities, including mountain biking, pony rides and soccer.  The Winter program will usually offer a variety of “arts”: art, creative movement, dance, clay, etc.

Enrollment is limited to Butler School students and registration is handled by the school.  For more information or questions about the Kaleidoscope program, contact Diane Long at diane@butlerschool.org or by phone at 301-977-6600.

SPRING 2012  Kaleidoscope Classes:

Creative Movement: Primary (8 sessions)

This innovative program incorporates visual art, music, acting, and dance into one hour of giggling, wiggling, mind-expanding fun! Students will gain body awareness, self-control, and learn the foundations of movement. Wear light comfortable clothing and bring an art smock (or an old tee shirt).

Chess:  Ages 6-12 (8 sessions)

Learn basic strategy, rules, and tips on playing the classic game of chess.   Chess can help improve concentration and confidence as well as teach good sportsmanship.    Research has shown that chess can even help students’ academic performance.    Suitable for beginners and intermediate players

Hip-Hop Dance:  Grades 3-8 (5 sessions)

Students will learn the latest hip hop moves to the music they love! No dance experience is necessary. We’ll explore basic reggae ton, pop & lock, and floor work. Wear tennis shoes and light, comfortable clothing. Come get your move on!

Mountain Biking: Grades 4-8 (5 sessions)

Students will work on basic mechanical skills to repair and maintain bikes, learn how to do pre-trip bike checks, tire repair, gear inspections, etc.  Students will bike on both campus and off campus trails.  Rain gear, comfortable (not baggy) clothing and sneakers are recommended (no boots or open-toe shoes).

Pony Walk: 3:15: Primary (5 sessions)

Our young Primary students will have an introduction to horseback riding with one of the Butler Barn staff.   Children will be led (at least one full circle around the ring) on one of Butler Barn’s loveable ponies. These young riders will need to wear long pants and if possible, shoes with a hard sole; helmets will be provided.

Please note: A parent (or other adult) must accompany and remain with the student during the Pony Walk sessions.

Soccer: Ages 4-9 yrs. (7 sessions)

Children will be encouraged to develop their mental, physical and social abilities through creative soccer games and other activities taught by highly experienced staff who are trained in working with young children.  Participants will learn individual skills and teamwork, and most importantly, have fun!

Vaulting on Horseback: (7 sessions)

Introductory: Grades K-8

Novice: Grades 2 -8

Vaulting combines gymnastics, dance and horses!  “Safety First” provides the guidelines for this popular equestrian activity.  The vaulter practices several movements on the horse’s back while it is walking/trotting in a circle on a lunge line controlled by the trainer.  Movements are first practiced on a “vaulting barrel” before the vaulter mounts the horse.  A harness with handles, along with a thick horse pad, enables even the youngest vaulters to feel confident as they learn a variety of “positions” on the horse.

The Introductory class will start with basic poses while becoming comfortable with both the horse and riding.  The Novice riders will learn new poses and continue to refine their movements, balance and posture on horseback.  Additionally, they will have lessons in horsemanship to increase their knowledge and experience with horses.

Yoga: Grades 1-6 (8 sessions)

Yoga classes for these students will begin with a breathing exercise, used to encourage awareness within.  They will enjoy yoga games and stories as they learn various yoga poses to promote balance, flexibility and strength, as well as yoga concepts, such as patience and self control.  Each session will have a theme to develop a particular focus of discipline.  Students need to bring their own mats.
