The Butler School Stables are open to the public. We have miles of trails, a large indoor riding ring and multiple outdoor riding rings. Whether your interest lies in an introduction to horseback riding, pleasure riding or the competitive circuits of dressage, equitation, or eventing, Butler School Stables has a class designed to teach you the appropriate skills. Students are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of local activities. All classes include instruction in horse management. We aspire to develop complete horsemen according to each rider's individual goals. Many riders find it difficult to own a horse due to the cost of ownership and commitments that prevent daily maintenance and exercise. Butler offers the opportunity to develop a close relationship between horse and rider, and to care for and compete a horse without the commitment of horse ownership. Over the years we have come to appreciate that the happiest horses are those that are handled by familiar individuals. All riders at Level 2 and above are assigned their own horse to groom, tack and ride. A personal locker for your equipment is also assigned at Level 2. During the summer months, Butler Camp provides young riders with the opportunity to participate in an intensive daily equestrian program with a wide variety of activities.
Introductory: Students will learn to mount, correctly adjust their equipment and begin work at the walk and trot, learning basic control signals. Some lessons will include basic barn procedures such as haltering and removing tack.
Level One: Riders will work to improve their position at the walk and trot and be introduced to the canter. Work over cavalettis will be introduced. Riders at this level should be able to bridle a horse and adjust tack when it is necessary.
Level Two: At this level riders are now able to be assigned their own horse. With their assigned horse, riders will work perfecting their position on the flat and will be introduced to jumping. There will be opportunities to leave the ring for games and trail rides.
Level Three: The ability to start working a horse "on the aides" is a prerequisite for this level. Riders will learn to jump courses and work over fences outside of the ring. Riders are expected to keep their horses trimmed and turned out properly.
Level Four: Emphasis at this level switches from rider
development to horse development and training. Riders should be capable of
working young horses on the flat and over fences. Riders at this level are expected to
display leadership skills.
Level Five: Independent Study. While continuing to work in lessons and compete with the program, riders may pursue individual areas of interest.
Lynne Woods
With 25 years of professional experience behind her, Lynne has a lifetime of equestrian training experiences to draw on as the Director of Butler School's Equestrian Program. At age 6, Lynne started riding and was soon training under the direction of German Reitlehrer, Lee Rhodes. While still in her teens, Lynne obtained her A rating in International Pony Club and competed and won at the Advanced Level in Combined Training. After college, she taught and rode professionally in the USA and Europe and was granted permission by the United States Equestrian Federation to attend the French Cavalry School at Saumur, France, one of the top venues for International Training in the world. While there, studying with the Cadre Noir, she garnered her International Trainers License and successfully represented the United States in International Competition. Returning to the United States, Lynne opened her own competition stable in the Potomac, Maryland area. For over 20 years Lynne's students have competed successfully up and down the eastern states.
Annette Rosemann
Passionate about horses, Annette has worked locally and on the winter circuit in Florida focusing primarily on dressage. "I evented when I was younger, but dressage is what keeps me in the business." Enthusiastic and outgoing, Annette's charm helps Butler students feel right at home. She is in charge of stable operations and makes sure that the horses are happy, healthy and glad to see us.
