Admissions Process
Step 1: Learn About Butler Montessori
Lower School (Infant–Grade 6)
Families begin by attending a required virtual information session led by an AMI-trained Montessori Guide. This session introduces our Montessori philosophy, programs, and community values and is required before submitting an application.
Upper School (Grades 7–12)
Families begin with an in-person campus tour, which introduces our adolescent program, learning environments, and community life.
Step 2: Submit an Application
Lower School & Upper School
After completing the initial visit or information session, families receive a link to complete the online admissions application. A $100 refundable application fee is required at the time of submission (fee is non-refundable after the admission interview).
Step 3: Admissions Interview & Campus Visit
Lower School (Infant–Grade 6)
Applications are reviewed as space allows. If an opening is available and an application indicates a potential fit, families are invited to an admissions interview. At that time, parents receive a complete personalized tour of the classrooms and campus.
Children applying to Kindergarten and above will also be invited for a classroom visit after an educational screening.
Upper School (Grades 7–12)
If an application indicates a potential fit and an educational screening, families and students are invited to a family interview, and students spend 2 days in classrooms engaging with peers and faculty.
Step 4: Admissions Decision
Lower School & Upper School
Following the interview and any student visit, families are notified of the admissions decision.
Step 5: Enrollment
If your child is offered admission, you will receive an email with a link to our parent portal. Follow the instructions to complete the enrollment contract along with a $1,000 deposit to secure your child’s place at our school. This deposit will be returned upon graduation or withdrawal in accordance with your enrollment contract.
Special Considerations
Priority Applicants
Siblings of currently enrolled students, as well as children with a previous Montessori background, are given priority to the limited number of spaces we have in our classrooms. Part of what makes this model so successful is the long-term process of education and growth that Montessori is famous for. We have a commitment to our community to ensure its success by doing everything we can to create a diverse and stable environment.
Tuition Assistance / Financial Aid
The Tuition Assistance Committee’s mission is to allow every committed family access to an affordable Montessori Education. The Committee awards Tuition Assistance considering several factors, including the family’s need as reported through the Financial Aid for School Tuition (FAST) application, Butler Montessori’s Tuition Assistance budget, as well as other pertinent information. Families who have been part of the Butler Montessori Community for at least one school year are welcome to apply for Tuition Assistance. First-year families, new to the school, will not be eligible to apply.
In line with our mission and dedication to our families, Butler Montessori is committed to maintaining affordable tuition. Guided by fiscal responsibility and the Board's oversight, we stand as one of the most financially accessible choices among independent and Montessori schools in the Washington, DC metro area.

"What I love about Butler Montessori is how it allows a child to blossom into their own person while guiding them to be responsible, kind, and bright contributors to their community and society as a whole."
